“I thought we were having an earthquake” during the Jackson Corporation home explosion

HOLTON, KS (WIBW) – Kelly Shirley lives on the road from a house blast that killed a man and seriously injured his wife Monday night.

On Tuesday, she recalls, “I was home last night around 6:15 on the sofa watching TV when the walls shook, the windows shook, and the dogs went crazy.”

She said she could feel the gravity of the situation a few homes away from her.

She said, “I am originally from California, and I originally thought that we were experiencing an earthquake and then I heard the sound and realized that it was something more than that.”

“It was loud and then the windows were still vibrating, and it was so close that I thought it was something in the property like a garage bombing or something like that.”

Jackson Corporation sheriff Tim Morse identified the man who died in the blast as Billy “Lou” Griffiths, 61-year-old Banner Lake director.

“Our hearts are broken this morning. We want to thank you for reaching out to us via text or messaging. We love our Buhaira family, and we will miss it so much. Keep his family and friends in your thoughts and pray for his wife Terry,” read a statement on the Buhaira Facebook page.

The Royal Valley Schools District told 13 News that Terry Griffiths is an audiovisual teacher at Royal Valley High School and shared her sympathy.

Authorities said she was airlifted from the scene with serious burns and felt debris from the scene a mile away. .

Shirley recalled: “When I got inside and saw black smoke coming up, I realized that something bad happened there so we could feel it all the way here.”

The Kansas Fire Marshal office is assisting with the investigation,

Morse said the blast may have been related to the gas, but an investigation was underway.
