A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near Te Anau.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake caused a slight tremor in Lower South Island on Monday afternoon.

GeoNet shows that the earthquake occurred 70 kilometers west of Te Anau, at a depth of 13 kilometers, at 4:09 pm.

The earthquake was felt widely by people, as many people reported the tremors to GeoNet.

FreshChoice Te Anau partner Monica Cullen said she was in the upstairs office when the earthquake struck.

“The building shook … There was a little bit of noise; it was so short and cute.”

Miter 10 Te Anau floor manager Alison Dewhurst felt the shake while serving the client.

“It was a jolt for a few seconds, that’s it,” Dewhorst said.

Police said there were no reports of damage.
