Puerto Rico has been plagued by a series of earthquakes since the end of December, and on Saturday, another earthquake hit the island. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.4, struck around 7:15 am near Ponce, Puerto Rico, the epicenter of previous earthquakes.

The earthquake is just another kick for an island that has yet to fully recover from Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, and is struggling with a COVID-19 pandemic as people remain in shelters from previous earthquakes.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths, but at least 50 families were displaced by the earthquake.

Puerto Rico is in the midst of a two-month closure as COVID-19 sweeps the world. The Governor of Wanda Vasquez urged residents to be careful and calm in a tweet: “If the infrastructure is damaged, you must leave with your face mask and emergency bag installed.”

Vázquez also urged those who usually volunteer to stay home.

Vasquez said: “We are facing an emergency, but we cannot forget that the most lethal one in our hands is COVID-19.”

At least 17 other tremors were felt throughout the day on Saturday, measuring 2.5 to 4.6.
