Western Indiana earthquake felt in Kokomo | News

If you feel the walls around you and the floor below shaking a little after 3pm on Thursday, you’re not alone.

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter near Montezuma and Bloomingdale counties caused tremors across much of Indiana that were felt in parts of Howard and Kokomo County, according to the United States Geological Survey. Bloomingdale and Montezuma are located approximately 90 miles east of Kokomo, near the Indiana-Illinois border.

According to the USGS, the depth of tremors was felt as far east as Muncie, as south as Bloomington, as far west as Decatur, Illinois, and as far north as Lake County. The US Geological Survey says earthquakes measuring 3.5 or less on the Richter scale are often not felt by people.

3.8 on the Richter scale is classified as “minor” and is described as “often felt by people, but it rarely causes harm. Vibration of internal things can be observed.”

Many county residents took to social media to report that the walls of their homes vibrated during the earthquake. There were no reports of major damage or injuries from the quake as of Thursday evening.

While Indiana may not be the first case that comes to mind when one thinks of earthquakes, they do happen occasionally. This is because the state is located near two fault lines and two seismic zones – the Wabash Valley seismic zone and the New Madrid seismic zone.

The two regions have been responsible for some major earthquakes in the past – the most recent being a 5.2-magnitude earthquake in 2008 that originated near Mount Carmel, Illinois. The earthquake was felt in several states and caused damage to many buildings and bridges across the Midwest.
