Ashley Taylor, of Chesterton, said she was inside when she felt the walls of her house briefly shake, disturbing her pets.

“The dogs were crazy, barking, they didn’t like storms and fireworks,” she said. “I thought it might have been thunder but it was clear outside. I called my husband and he said he felt something at his work in Valparaíso. This is the first time I have felt something like this.”

While Indiana is relatively uncommon, it has had occasional tremors in the past, some of which even decimated Hoosier towns. The 1895 Charleston, Missouri earthquake reportedly caused damage to buildings in Evansville and other southwestern Indiana communities.

The most notable earthquake was recorded on September 27, 1909, in the Wabash River Valley in Indiana, according to the US Geological Survey. Homes suffered structural damage, windows were shattered, walls cracked, and chimneys ran down.

Before the latest earthquake, Indiana residents may have felt the echoes of the 5.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred near the Virginia and North Carolina border on the morning of August 9, 2020.

Since 2000, a total of 16 earthquakes have hit Indiana communities, according to US Geological Survey data. Most of the earthquakes appear to have been in the southwestern part of Indiana, including Evansville, Greencastle, Mount Vernon, Princeton, Poseyville, Washington, and Bicknell.
