The ferry sinks to Bali; 7 dead, 11 missing, SE Asia News & SE Asia
JAKARTA Indonesian rescuers were searching for 11 people still missing after a passenger ferry sank off the coast of Bali in the rough sea, killing at least seven, authorities said yesterday.
Dozens of survivors were pulled from the water Tuesday night after the KMP Junik, carrying 57 passengers and crew, landed near Gilimanuk port on the western edge of the holiday island.
He had traveled across a narrow strait from the island of Java.
But 11 people went missing yesterday as authorities confirmed they had pulled seven dead from the waters, updating an earlier tax.
“We are still searching for the missing,” said search and rescue chief Bali Gede Darmada. “Last night, rescue was hampered by low visibility and high waves.”
It was unclear what caused the accident. Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where many use ferries and other boats to travel despite poor safety standards.
In 2018, about 160 people drowned when a ferry sank in the depths of one of the world’s deepest lakes on the island of Sumatra.
And more than 300 people are estimated to have drowned in 2009 when a ferry sank between Sulawesi and Borneo.
