Marwa: Over 2,000 people were treated for drug-related illnesses in five months
Buba Marwa, chairwoman of the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says over 2,000 people were treated for drug-related illnesses between January and May.
Speaking Saturday at a book presentation, he said no less than 5,000 suspected drug perpetrators were arrested within the first five months of the year.
The book, entitled “Victory at Defeat: The Manifestation of the Power of the Gods,” is authored by Larinde Laoye, a retired Brigadier General of the Nigerian Army.
Marwa said 500 convictions have been secured, while 2,303 individuals have been advised and treated for drug-related problems within the period under review.
He said more than two million kilograms of various drugs were seized and over $ 90 billion worth of drugs and money found.
According to the head of NDLEA, statistics on drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking recorded by the agency in the first five months of the year call for prudent reflection.
“These statistics are alarming and are red flags for the need to protect the future of the younger generation,” NAN quoted Marwa as saying.
