Hundreds of cleaners at Denver International Airport will go on strike
DENVER (KDVR) Hundreds of Denver International Airport cleaners plan to go out of work on Friday after weekly negotiations over better pay and working conditions failed.
The workers had negotiated with the contractor they work for, the Flag Services of the Facility. An agreement was not reached Thursday night, when the previous employee contract expired, according to the International Local Union Employee Service 105.
We were united in this because we all deserve fair pay for our work, said DIA goalkeeper Luis Gonzalez in a press release. This is not easy for any of us, but we need to stand together to make sure we are treated fairly for the essential work we do. So do whatever it takes to make this an better airport for everyone, because when airport workers get paid, we can live, we can create a better experience for travelers.
SEIU Local 105 said 350 of its members will take part in the strike. Most of them are people of color and immigrants, the union said.
“Everyone knows that the people who work here keep this job, every job is essential,” DIA goalkeeper Amer Garsak said in a statement. “That is why they have called us heroes in the last 20 months. Until they realize that by treating us this way, we should do what is necessary for our families.
In a three-day vote, 99% of local chapter members voted Wednesday in support of the strike, and the union announced Thursday night that it would pass the measure.
SEIU Local 105 has a rally planned at Westin Plaza on the south side of the airport on Friday at 12pm.
