Custody deaths in Thoothukudi: CBI files indictment with names of 9 police officers for torturing father and son
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an indictment against nine Tamil Nadu police officers, including the station house (SHO) officer at Thoothukudi police station, for allegedly illegally taking and torturing P Jayaraj and J Bennicks all June night. The men died at the hospital.
The indictment names former Sathankulam police station S Sridhar, two deputy inspectors K Balakrishnan and P Raghuganesh, two insurgents S Murugan and A Samadurai and four soldiers M Muthuraja, S Chelladurai, X Thomas Francis and Veyil Muthu for criminal conspiracy, murder, unjust closure, destruction of evidence and filing of false accusations. The nine are currently in jail. Deputy Inspector Pauldurai, whom the agency arrested in July and who died in jail over Covid-19, has not been charged in the indictment, but his role has been mentioned in the alleged plot, officials said.
P Jayaraj (59) and his son J Bennicks (31) were arrested on June 19 and placed in Kovilpatti Prison for keeping their mobile phone shop in Sathankulam’s main market open during a polyphony imposed during Covid-19 isolation.
The father and son are suspected of being tortured during a police detention, after which they were admitted to the Kovilpatti government hospital on 22 June. As the Bennicks died that night, Jayaraj passed away on the morning of June 23rd.
The incident had led to massive public outrage across the country demanding action against the accused police officers. The Tamil Nadu government ordered a CBI investigation in the first week of July, after which a special team was sent to investigate the custody death.
CBI spokesman RK Gaur said, “A CBI team camped in Madurai and worked tirelessly through the Covid-19 pandemic.”
In fact, nine CBI officers became infected with Covid-19 while investigating the case.
Sharing the details of the indictment, Gaur said, “The investigation revealed that the father-son duo were arrested on June 19, 2020 and tortured at the Sathankulam police station by the accused in the evening as well as on the intrusive night, as a result of which both were wounded and died on the intrusive night of June 22 and 23.
Officials who did not want to be named added that Sathankulam police station officials, “to cover up their misdeeds, not only destroyed evidence of torture, but also recorded false cases against both dead over allegations that the father and The boy did not close the mobile shop even after the allowed time and in this way he violated the general restraining orders ”.
This officer added that the role of others in the death as well as the subsequent concealment is being further investigated.
