The term of office of the CBDT chairman was extended for another three months
This is the third extension given to PC Mody, a 1982 IRS Income Tax Officer
The Center on Sunday extended the term of PC Mody, Chairman of the CBDT, for three months in force from March 1 to May 31.
This is the third extension given to Mr. Mody, a 1982 Income Tax Officer (IRS) cadre income officer. Previously, his term was extended by six months last August and before that for one year in August 2019.
Interestingly, in addition to being the chairman of the highest body of tax policy, Mr. Mody also holds the responsibility of member (investigation), a valuable task, in the CBDT.
Mr. Mody had taken office as the new chairman of the CBDT on 15 February 2019.
Prior to his promotion, Mr. Mody was a member administrator of the CBDT, the top political body of the Revenue Tax Department. He was succeeded by Sushil Chandra, who was appointed Election Commissioner.
On Saturday, Secretary of the Treasury Ajay Bhushan Pandey, terminated by the Secretary’s Revenue Department,’s additional service and charge, was handed over to Secretary of Economic Affairs Tarun Bajaj.
Now, Mr Bajaj, a veteran bureaucrat with a position in the OPM before moving to the Ministry of Finance as Secretary of Economic Affairs, and TV Expenditure Secretary Somnathan will play a crucial role as the government struggles to lead the hit economy pandemic.
Mr. Somnathan also had an assignment at the PMO earlier.
Moreover, there are several vacancies in the highest direct tax policy-making body and the government is in the process of appointments.
According to sources, the government has already conducted two rounds of interviews of candidates selected to be nominated as members of the CBDT.
