WHO Declares End of Second Ebola Outbreak in Guinea | Guinea News
The second outbreak, announced in February, killed at least 12 people.
The West African Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization said on Saturday that an outbreak of Ebola, which began in Guinea in February, infected 16 people and killed 12 people, was declared.
“We are honored to declare the end of Ebola in Guinea,” WHO official Alfred Kizerbo said at a ceremony in the southeastern part of the Nzerekore region, where the disease surfaced earlier this year.
Health Minister Remy Lamah added, “In the name of the head of state (President Alpha Conde), I want to declare the end of the resurgence of Ebola in Guinea.”
Health officials were able to act swiftly to tackle the virus’s resurgence, following lessons learned from previous outbreaks in Guinea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“Through quick and coordinated response efforts based on lessons learned from the 2014-16 outbreak … Guinea was able to control the outbreak and prevent it from spreading across national borders,” said WHO Chief Tedros. Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.
In February, Guinea launched vaccination campaigns to stop the spread of the disease.
The 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak killed 11,300 people, primarily in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Ebola causes severe fever and, in the worst case, unstoppable bleeding.
It is transmitted through close contact with body fluids and is most endangered by those who live with or care for Ebola patients.
