New research focuses on molecular changes in deadly metastatic breast cancer
In this study, we collected primary and metastatic tumor samples and used them to study the molecular changes that occur when breast cancer first begins to spread and when the disease progresses.
This study was published in Cancer Discovery, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
After examining 381 patients, researchers found molecular changes common to metastatic samples, such as driver gene mutations and copy number polymorphisms.
AURORA also has the largest RNA sequencing data set in MBC. It often indicates that the intrinsic subtype of breast cancer changes as MBC progresses. These discoveries shed light on the molecular progression of the disease.
Nonetheless, it is unclear why some patients with MBC survive longer than others, but patients with high tumor mutation burden (TMB) in the primary tumor have a shorter overall survival prospect and understand survival. It was a potentially important step in doing so.
