Rabies Skunk Test Positive After Spraying Dogs With Lafayette – CBS Denver

Boulder County, Colorado (CBS4) – After spraying dogs with Lafayette last week, Skunk tested positive for rabies. Residents found the skunk dead in the backyard and contacted the park ranger who notified Boulder County Public Health.

Residents reported that their dogs were sprayed by the skunk before the skunk died. According to health officials, the dog has already been vaccinated against rabies and is currently under home surveillance for 45 days.

BCPH states that rabies skunk has become an “important source” of rabies throughout eastern Colorado and the front range. Raccoons and foxes can also carry the disease and can spread to pets.

Marshall Lips, BCPH’s Environmental Health Specialist, said: “Sadly, if an unvaccinated pet comes into contact with a rabies animal, it must be euthanized at the owner’s expense or placed in a four-month quarantine.”

BCPH has issued the following recommendations to reduce the risk of exposure to rabies.

• Do not treat unfamiliar animals, wild or livestock, even if they appear to be friendly. Contact Animal Care to collect animals.
• Wash animal wounds thoroughly with soap and water and see a doctor immediately.
• Keep all dog, cat, ferret and horse vaccinations up to date.
• Maintain pet control by placing cats and ferrets indoors and supervising dogs directly.
• Tell the children to leave the wildlife alone.
• Do not leave pet food or livestock food in a location accessible to wildlife.
• If a person or pet is bitten or contacted by a skunk or wildlife, seek immediate medical care and contact your local animal care agency or the Boulder County Public Health Service to arrange a rabies test. ..
