Dallas County reaches 80% herd immunity threshold

According to a July 7 statement from the Parkland Clinical Innovation Center, Dallas County reached herd immunity after more than 16 months of fighting COVID-19.
According to the statement, the county achieved a herd immunity threshold of 80% on July 4. That percentage includes 46.6% of the total vaccinated population and the remaining 48.7% who have innate immunity from previous COVID-19 infections.
“This represents good progress, but it’s important to understand that we’re not done,” PCCI CEO Steve Miff said in a statement. “We must continue to promote vaccination so that COVID and its variants do not re-establish and undermine our progress.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, herd immunity occurs when most of the community is immune to the disease, and the spread of human-to-human transmission is unlikely. This provides extensive protection for all members of the community, including those who have not been vaccinated.
According to a news release on July 7, there have been a total of 263,529 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Dallas County since the follow-up began last spring. A total of 4,139 inhabitants have died from the virus, the release said.
“The community still has important pockets that remain vulnerable,” Miff said, pointing out that 45 zip codes haven’t reached the 80% threshold. According to the statement, 49 of the county zip codes reached 80%, 25 zip codes were between 70% and 80%, and another 20 zip codes were below 70%.
The more infectious delta mutants will become the predominant strain within a few weeks, potentially raising the herd immunity threshold to 88%, Miff said. He added that the variants now make up about 25% of COVID-19 cases locally.
The county is still lagging behind in vaccination, with only 38% of the total population receiving both vaccines and 47% receiving a single vaccination.
“Previous infections and partial vaccination provide some protection, but all evidence shows that full vaccination is the most effective way to stay safe against delta mutants. I suggest, “Miff said in a statement.
Full approval of the mRNA vaccine from the Federal Pharmacy is expected in the coming weeks, and approval to vaccinate children under the age of 12 is expected in the fall, Miff said.
