A Lake Jackson man is in a hospital recovering from a rare carnivorous bacterium he said he signed on Wednesday.
Woody Harville was infected twice with the naturally occurring bacterium Vibrio vulnificus. The 68-year-old said he caught it for the first time with his right hand on Memorial Day weekend while surf fishing at Brazoria County Beach near the surfside. Harville said he was infected with bacteria again with his left hand while fishing on the same beach Wednesday morning.
“I finally decided to unbandage and go fishing two weeks ago. And I was very careful. I didn’t get this wet. I had it sealed and then I got it. I got it, “Harville said.
Harville had to undergo both surgeries at UTMB Galveston. He said he didn’t know how to get Vibrio because he had no open cuts or scratches. This is usually the way people get infected with bacteria.

The Galveston County Health Department said only two cases were reported in Vibrio in 2021. One was Crystal Beach and the other was food related.
