Studies show that smoking cessation was associated with a high 5-year overall survival rate of 60.6% compared to 48.6% of those who did not quit. It was also associated with a low risk of death from all causes, cancer-specific deaths, and disease progression.
Researchers have found that smoking cessation in all patient subgroups, including those with late-stage tumors and those with a high number of smokers, has a life-prolonging effect.
