Intensive care unit labeled “Very Tight” in Northern Michigan
Intensive care unit availability and emergency care service coverage are “very tight” in northern Michigan, according to a recommendation released Friday night by the Upper Peninsula District Health Department.
This notice came from the fact that cases and hospitalizations for COVID-19 have increased in the state for over a month amid concerns from health authorities about the fourth wave of the virus that hits the state.
“We received advice from UP’s Region 8 Healthcare Coalition and Northern Lower Michigan’s Region 7 that the availability of ICU beds is very tight as well as the scope of EMS,” said the LMAS District Health Department’s recommendation to serve Ruth residents. “Over the past week, hospitalizations across the region have been steadily increasing,” the advisory said. “The number of COVID visits in the emergency department is also on the rise throughout the region.”
On Friday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 3,958 new infections and 69 new virus-related deaths across the state in two days. In the last 7 days, the state has reported 12,104 new COVID-19 cases, an increase of 16% from the total of the last 7 days.
The number of adults admitted to Michigan with confirmed cases of the virus reached 1,115 on Friday. Aggregates have risen throughout August, but well below the peak of hospitalizations for more than 4,000 adults reached during the spring surge in Michigan.
However, public health officials are concerned about highly contagious delta variants and spikes in cases and hospitalizations occurring in other states.
The Michigan Department of Health says it expects a fourth surge.
In July, Ruth, Mackinac, Algiers, and Schoolcraft counties added seven COVID-19 cases, according to the county’s Department of Health. From August 1st to Friday, the county reported 205 new cases, an increase of 2,829%, according to the agency.
