Four possible local cases of West Nile virus found in humans
Corpus Christi, Texas-Corpus Christi-Newses County Public Health District has been notified of four possible test reports of West Nile virus infection in humans.
Three of the residents live in zip code 78415, which had a positive case of West Nile virus identified in mosquitoes.
The fourth resident lives in 78409 and has not been confirmed to be positive for West Nile virus in mosquitoes.
The age range is 55 to 85 years.
Three patients had fever, nausea, and weakness. The fourth patient showed signs of confusion on admission.
These are the first human cases of West Nile virus identified in Nueces County in 2021.
No further information has been released for privacy and confidentiality reasons, city officials said.
West Nile virus is a disease that spreads when bitten by an infected mosquito.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Texas has reported nine cases of West Nile fever, with no deaths in 2021.
The symptoms of West Nile virus are:
- heat
- headache
- Tired
- Body pain
- Occasionally, you may have a rash on your trunk.
- Swelling of the lymph glands
- Changes in mental status
- The illness can last from days to weeks
Residents are advised to protect themselves from mosquito bites by avoiding outdoor activities, especially during dusk and dawn.
Outdoors, wear insect repellents containing FDA-approved DEET and reduce mosquito breeding grounds by disposing of items that may contain pooled water, such as tires, toys, and water buckets, in the yard. Also, if a resident develops any of these symptoms after being bitten by a mosquito, see a doctor immediately.
As a result of this confirmed case, Vector Services will implement a mosquito management response plan. The response includes the following:
- As the weather permits, spray a 1/2 mile radius around the detection area for three consecutive nights starting Wednesday evening.
- Vector Services provides ongoing monitoring of mosquito traps in the immediate vicinity for signs of Culex species of mosquitoes that cause West Nile virus.
