Residents of Commerce City attacked by West Nile virus
Residents of Commerce City, who were hospitalized with a positive West Nile virus test, are now recovering at home.
A recovering patient experienced West Nile virus fever, according to a news release from the Tri-County Health Department. This usually includes other symptoms such as headache, body pain, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.
“The incident follows reports of WNV-infected mosquitoes in Adams and Arapahoe counties and three infected horses in Adams counties in the past two weeks,” the release said.
West Nile virus is usually spread to people by infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected when they eat infected birds. Infected mosquitoes spread the virus to humans and other animals by chewing them.
People can fight the West Nile virus in the following ways:
- Drain standing water to reduce mosquito breeding.
- Try to avoid outdoor hours from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- Use products containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or lemon eucalyptus oil and other mosquito repellents.
- If you are outdoors at night, wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, shoes and socks.
“Most people infected with WNV recover completely, but one in 150 develops a serious illness that affects the central nervous system,” said the Department of Health. “Serious illness complications include encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord), which can be fatal in rare cases.”
The first human case of WNV in Colorado this season was reported on August 13, the release said. To date, 15 people in the state have been tested positive for the virus. 7 required hospitalizations. WNVs were found in 11 Colorado counties this year, including Adams, Arapaho, Boulder, Denver, Jefferson, Larimar, and Weld.
