OU Health Doctor Explains Risk of Myocarditis Due to COVID-19 Vaccine and COVID-19 Virus
According to a recent report from New Zealand, the woman died after receiving the Pfizer vaccine, and her death was due to myocarditis.
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart. Symptoms of the disease include chest pain, arrhythmia, and shortness of breath.
“The virus itself enters the heart cells, where they cause a local immune response that causes myocarditis,” said Dr. Stavros Stavrakis of OU Health.
Studies have shown that COVID-19 is more likely to develop myocarditis and is more deadly than a vaccine against the virus.
“If one million people are vaccinated, 12 of them will have myocarditis,” Stavrakis said.
Conversely, if you are infected with the COVID-19 virus without being vaccinated, your chances of myocarditis are nearly 10,000 times higher.
“There is a 10% chance of getting myocarditis from this disease,” says Stavrakis.
Myocarditis can develop, but inflammation is unlikely to be fatal, Stabrakis said.
“Myocarditis deaths are rare. In very severe cases, congestive heart failure can occur,” he said.
More generally, studies show that two-thirds of people recover from myocarditis without problems, and one-third of patients may have long-term heart damage.
“I want to encourage people to get vaccinated. That’s how you prevent myocarditis,” Stabrakis said.
