West Nile virus detected in Steuben County.No human cases have been reported
Steuben County, Indiana (WANE) – A mosquito that carries the West Nile virus has been found in Steuben County, the county health department announced Thursday.
A herd of mosquitoes was gathered in the northwestern part of the county on August 19 and tested positive for the virus, the agency said. To date, no human cases of West Nile virus have been reported.
“West Nile virus can cause West Nile fever, a mild illness such as fever, headache, body pain, swollen lymph nodes, and rash,” said the Steven County Health Department. “Some people develop more severe illnesses with other serious syndromes such as encephalitis, meningitis, and flaccid paralysis.”
Residents are required to protect themselves from mosquitoes as they continue to operate above 60 degrees Celsius and continue until the first hard freeze.
State health authorities recommend the following precautions:
- Avoid areas where mosquitoes are biting
- Apply an insect repellent containing DEET, picaradin, or lemon eucalyptus oil to clothing or exposed skin
- Install or repair screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home
- If possible, when walking in trousers and long-sleeved areas, especially in wooded areas or swamps
To reduce potential mosquito breeding grounds:
- Discard old tires, tin cans, ceramic pots, or other containers that can hold water
- Repair of failed septic tank
- Drill a hole in the bottom of a recycling container left outdoors
- Cut the grass short and cut the shrubs
- Clean clogged roof gutters, especially if the leaves tend to block the drains
- Change the water in the pet bowl frequently
- Rinse the decorative fountains and bird baths regularly
- Ventilate the ornamental pool or store predatory fish
People who may have been infected with the West Nile virus will be asked to consult a doctor for testing and treatment.
