Boy dies in amoeba eating brain in Splash Pad in Texas Park
Arlington, Texas — A child died after being infected with a rare brain-eating amoeba found on a Splash Pad in Texas that he visited. Reviews have found water quality test failures in some parks.
Arlington officials, located between Dallas and Fort Worth, told the City and Tarant County Public Health Department on September 5 that primary amoebic, a rare and often fatal infection caused by Naegleria faurelia meba. He said he was informed that his child was hospitalized for meningoencephalitis. The boy, who was not identified by the authorities, died in the hospital on September 11.
After learning of the child’s illness, health officials began an investigation and closed all public splash pads in the city. City officials said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the presence of amoeba in water samples from the Don Mizan Himer Park Splash Pad on Friday.
The review “identified a gap in our daily inspection program,” said Deputy Mayor Remuel Randolph. “These gaps made it impossible to meet splash pad maintenance standards.”
According to city officials, records from two of the four Splash Pads at Don Mizan Himmer Park and Beacon Recreation Center are recorded by Parks and Recreation employees, and the facility is open daily.
City officials recorded water chlorination measurements on two of three dates when the child was there in late August and early September, according to a review of inspection logs on Don Misenhimmer’s Splash Pad. He says he found out that he didn’t.

City officials say Arlington’s drinking water supply was unaffected and the splash pad was equipped with a backflow prevention device designed to isolate water from the city’s water distribution system.
According to the CDC, infection with Naegleria fowleri is rare, with only 34 reported in the United States between 2010 and 2019. When water containing amoeba enters the body through the nose, it is usually transmitted when swimming or diving in lakes or rivers.
