Onondaga County reveals a number of groundbreaking cases of Covid
Syracuse, NY — Breakthrough COVID-19 Cases occur in about 1% of residents of Onondaga County who have been completely vaccinated against the virus.
Since the vaccine was deployed earlier this year, residents of 293,452 counties have been fully vaccinated.
However, the county reports 3,223 breakthrough cases of Covid.
Of those cases, 14 fully vaccinated people died.
Most of the groundbreaking incidents in the county occur among people who have been vaccinated with Pfizer.
These are just some of the details about Covid’s groundbreaking case by Onondaga County executive Ryan McMahon revealed today at a press conference.
A groundbreaking case is when a person is infected with Covid despite being vaccinated against the virus.
County data on groundbreaking cases show that vaccines are “overall a very effective tool,” McMahon said.
“Vaccines are the best tool against the virus to keep out of hospitals and ICUs,” he said.
McMahon reported that three more people had died in Covid in the last 24 hours. One was a hospitalized man with an underlying illness. The other two were residents of an elderly care facility.
This has resulted in 761 deaths from Covid in the county since the pandemic in March 2020.
He also reported that 88 people were hospitalized in Covid, 25 of whom were in the intensive care unit. According to McMahon, 92% of people treated in Covid’s ICU are unvaccinated.
Of the fully vaccinated residents of the county, 65.8% received the Pfizer vaccine, 26.6% received the modelna vaccine, and 8.2% received the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Of the 3,223 county residents with groundbreaking Covid cases, 66.7% received the Pfizer vaccine, 21.1% received the Moderna vaccine, and 12.2% received Johnson & Johnson.
McMahon said the county analysis of vaccines received by residents suffering from breakthrough cases is very similar to national data.
