Birmingham, Alabama (WBRC)-A new study by researchers at Oxford University shows that long COVIDs are worse than many thoughts.
Long COVIDs are people who have been infected and continue to have health problems after the infection. Approximately 37% of 270,000 people infected with COVID say that their health symptoms persisted 3 to 6 months after their initial infection.
Lee Gordon is the mother of two boys infected with COVID-19 in May 2020. Gordon was still symptomatic in August of that year and had to be hospitalized. She says it’s an ongoing issue. “There have been four recurrences since August 2020. I was paralyzed from neck to foot,” Gordon said.
Oxford studies haven’t revealed what causes long COVID, how serious it is, and how long it lasts, but it’s much longer than the flu. Jefferson County health doctors were surprised by the large number of patients with problems due to COVID. “Some of the symptoms are common in the general population, so it’s difficult to study them. They can also be caused by other viral illnesses,” said Dr. Mark Wilson.
Long COVIDs can include a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, breathing problems, headaches, and abdominal problems. “Many people have long-term symptoms of COVID, which can last for at least a few months. Gordon has recently been fully vaccinated. She says she’s regained her passion for running, but she’s getting better these days. “I found that I was taking vitamin D-3 daily to prevent recurrence. I haven’t had a recurrence for four months,” Gordon said.
Dr. Wilson said his main advice is to do everything you can’t do to get a COVID. Get vaccinated. Wear a mask and stay socially separated. The study also told parents to do everything they could to get their children vaccinated so that they would not have long-term symptoms.
