What significant advances have you made in breast imaging over the 20 years you have been practicing?
Early in my career, mammograms were basically on film and needed processing and development. We have moved to digital. This was a major improvement, but in 2011, breast tomosynthesis was the most improved in its ability to detect breast cancer at a much earlier stage. This is a 3D digital X-ray. UPMC installed tomosynthesis immediately, so I and other radiologists on the UPMC system started using this technology as soon as it became available.
How has it changed patient care?
Tomosynthesis can detect breast cancer in the early stages when the tumor is very small. That is always my goal. Finding breast cancer when it is small, curable, and treatable, in order to give men and women the best chance of defeating the disease. Over 90% of breast cancers are curable but need to be detected early.
