Doctors record the journeys of breast cancer survivors in books to help them heal and raise awareness
Breast cancer survivors shared their experiences with doctors in the book as a treatment tool and as a way to fund research.
Brenda Confessore, Greenlawn’s three mothers, says she was shocked when she was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.
“I’m just thinking in my head.’This is the end. This is the end. I’m not going to get it done,” she says. “I have three girls and a husband. They are too young and need a mom — and I wasn’t going there.”
Roslyn’s young mother, Rebecca, was placed in a similar position after undergoing a medical examination.
“When I was in my early twenties, I did a genetic test and found out that I had inherited a BRACA 2 gene mutation, which greatly increases my risk of developing related cancers, one of which is I have breast cancer, “she says.
Both mothers decided that Rebecca would undergo a preventative mastectomy.
“The moment I learned that I had this mutation, I knew I would do everything prophylactically that I could control, so this wasn’t my reality in the future. “I did,” says Rebecca.
Long Island’s mother also underwent reconstructive breast surgery by Dr. Jonathan Banks of NYBRA Plastic Surgery.
The bank recorded the journeys of 24 breast cancer survivors, including Confessole and Rebecca.
“This year we had the opportunity to release a book that really captured the essence of what we are doing in plastic surgery,” he says. “It’s not from the physical side, but from the emotional side.”
Called “Before After,” the book features photographs of bank patients and written entries that document how they felt during the most difficult times of their lives.
The picture shows the most difficult days of life and a woman after surgery.
“They all capture what everyone wants: hope and smiles,” says Bank.
The women who participated in the project say they shared their story in the hope that they would inspire others in their healing process and draw attention to all forms of breast cancer.
“Today I am very grateful that it was the path I chose,” says Rebecca.
Confessole adds, “I’m here now, and that’s important.”
The proceeds from “Before After” will be directed towards advances in breast cancer in Long Island.
