St. Vincent, hosting BloodDrive, a vibrant, urgent need for blood and platelet donations | Community
Billings-In the midst of a serious blood and platelet deficiency, Vitalant is asking all eligible donors to book now.
In the release, Vitalant wrote that he was donating to 900 hospitals, including about 29 in Montana, earlier than they could come in.
ABO blood group, the most transfused blood group, clearly plummeted below the two-day supply. This is the lowest level since May 2020.
Busy donors are not making enough promises or keeping them as people resume their daily activities. Scheduling and maintaining donation reservations are both important to meet the needs of the patient.
“Compared to the beginning of the pandemic, patient needs are stronger than we expected,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president of Vitalant. “We are recruiting and keeping reservations for about 1,000 additional volunteer donors each week for the foreseeable future to ensure that Vitalant can help trauma victims, cancer patients and serious surgery.”
To assist, St. Vincent Healthcare is hosting a Public Blood Drive from 2:00 pm to 6:45 pm on Thursday, October 21st. It will be held at the Marilac Auditorium.

Vitalants are also experiencing a serious shortage of platelet donations. Platelets are small cells that help blood clots. They must be transfused within about a week of donation, and about 50% of platelets are given to cancer patients being treated.
There is no waiting period for donations after receiving a flu shot or COVID-19 vaccine, as long as all other eligibility requirements are met. Donors must also feel good on the day of donation.
Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome.
