Burlington, Vermont (WCAX)-We know that infants currently make up the majority of COVID cases in Vermont, but how big are they?
The Vermont Department of Health produces data that examines infections by age group. The latest figures from mid-September to mid-October show the highest prevalence between newborns and 11 years of age (currently 100% unvaccinated group), at 43 per 10,000. The next highest group is 12-29 years old, just under 31 per 10,000. Adults between the ages of 20 and 59 are close to one-third.
But those rates didn’t always look that way. At the beginning of the pandemic, adults had the most cases. Then, in October last year, teens and adults up to the age of 60 showed the largest increase. After that, the infection rate of teenagers soared and reached the highest infection rate in March this year. Cases decreased dramatically until Delta arrived in July. When school began, the youngest children were more prevalent than any other group throughout the pandemic.
One thing adults should remember-COVIDs are presented differently between children and adults. According to state data, the biggest symptom in children is a runny nose, which usually leads to illness for five days. Adults are most likely to cough and get sick for a week.
