Raleigh, North Carolina (WITN)-North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services officials have announced the first influenza-related deaths of the 2021-202 influenza season.
DHHS officials say an adult in the western part of the state died from a complication of the flu. People whose birthplace, county, age, and gender are not disclosed are reported to be positive for influenza and negative for COVID-19.
“This is a sad thing that reminds us that influenza is a serious illness that can lead to complications and even death,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Zack Moore.
According to DHHS, there were seven flu-related deaths during the flu season last year (2020-2021). In the previous year (2019-2020), there were 186 influenza-related deaths.
According to the ministry, influenza-related deaths in the last five seasons from 2020 to 2021 ranged from 186 to 391. In addition, North Carolina has seen more influenza activity than ever since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020.
