Shreveport, Louisiana (KSLA) —Louisiana is at the beginning of another COVID-19 surge due to a variant of Omicron.
That’s what Dr. Catherine O’Neill, Chief Medical Officer of Our Lady of the Lake Community Medical Center in Baton Rouge, said during a virtual COVID-19 media briefing on Monday, December 20th.
“It’s coming. Our community needs to prepare for it.”
Dr. John Vanchiere, an infectious disease specialist at LSU Health Shreveport, agrees. “We see a significant increase in positive rates in community tests and, unfortunately, in our nursing home tests.
“These numbers aren’t that big yet, but they’re definitely increasing,” Vanchiere continues. “We know that a variant of Omicron is here, and based on some of the data from elsewhere, we know that it spread like a wildfire. . “
The CDC announced on Monday that the Omicron variant is currently the most common coronavirus variant in the United States, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the country’s COVID cases.
He said that the Delta variant is still the dominant strain of Louisiana, but Vankiere may change soon. “We can expect Omicron to become the predominant strain within the next 10-14 days.”
Vankiere said the hospital was preparing for a possible surge apart from the vacation. “They are trying to optimize staffing and, of course, supplies. Supply chain issues are at the forefront of debate on a daily basis.
