Shorter COVID quarantine will help airports, hospitals, says UM medical professor
Miami – Highly contagious Omicron mutants primarily cause mild COVID-19 symptoms, which spread over the first few days prior to the symptoms and up to 3 days thereafter, approximately 5 days.
These are the scientific findings used by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support changes in quarantine times. The CDC recommends 5 days instead of 10 days quarantine.
Dr. Dushyantha Jayaweera, medical director of the clinical translational research site at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said the CDC has credible evidence to support the decision.
“Obviously, they didn’t make this up, they’re doing this based on the data, so I think the CDC was right,” said Jayaweera.
By being more contagious, the increase in infections is causing staff shortages in airports, governments, hospitals, and businesses.
This contributed to the cancellation of flights at Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and other nationwide flights.

Jayaweera said the new policy will help solve these problems and improve stability.
“We want to make sure there is a mechanism that can keep society functioning safely while pursuing science,” said Dr. Rochelle Warrensky, director of the CDC, on Monday.
