New Mexico Hospital Warns Waiting Times For Less Sick People | Health
Albuquerque, New Mexico (AP) — Employees of two of New Mexico’s largest healthcare providers issued a warning on Monday. People who appear in the hospital’s emergency room with mild or mild complaints should be ready to wait for a long time.
Officials at the University of New Mexico Hospital and Presbyterian Medical Services told reporters that their emergency department was overwhelmed and the situation was expected to worsen.
They emphasized that the most ill patients are treated first and that the emergency room is not a place for people seeking a COVID-19 test without severe symptoms.
“If you are very ill, we are here for you, and we want you to come in. If your illness is mild, we will tell you your doctor, It is really advisable to seek care through a virtual visit or some other alternative, said Dr. Steve McLaughlin, chair of the University of New Mexico’s School of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Jason Mitchell, Chief Medical Officer at Presbyterian, said staff are trying to deal with overrun emergency rooms by treating patients with mild problems in corridors and waiting rooms.
He also advised people to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu and helped keep the infection calm so that they could avoid traveling to the hospital.
