According to a new report, half of the ontarians who died from opioid overdose in the early stages of the pandemic interacted with the health care system in the month before their death.
And one in four was seen by a doctor, went to the emergency department, and was discharged a week before his death.
Unity Health and the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network have released a report today.
Researcher Dr. Tara Gomes says the interaction misses the opportunity to help people using opioids.
Gomez and her team previously discovered that in the first nine and a half months of the pandemic, opioid deaths increased by nearly 80% compared to the same period last year.
She states that the majority of these deaths are associated with non-prescription opioids, primarily illicit fentanyl.
