According to a new study, a set of parameters, including sleep and biological rhythm variables, is closely associated with the severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms from late pregnancy to the third month of life.

In the largest observational study to date investigating changes in perinatal sleep and biological rhythms, researchers have identified several variables associated with depression and anxiety. Most notably, changes in the circadian index (strength of circadian rhythm), average activity during nighttime rest, and amount of nighttime rest fragmentation are strongly associated with higher depressive and anxiety symptoms. Frey and his research team conducted a study from the Women’s Health Clinic in St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. This clinic specializes in perinatal, premenstrual, and menopausal psychiatric disorders.
The researchers recruited 100 females, 73 of whom were followed from the beginning of the third semester to three months after childbirth. They used a variety of tools, including questionnaires, actigraphs (wearable sleep monitors), laboratory assays, and other methods to subjectively and objectively measure sleep, biological rhythms, melatonin levels, and light exposure. Interestingly, findings show that certain biological rhythm variables may be important for depressive symptoms at specific points in time along the perinatal timeline. For example, high fragmentation of nighttime rest was associated with reduced depressive symptoms 6-12 weeks after delivery. This period tends to be consistent with the high risk of developing postpartum depression.
