Balmforce, 53, works as a nurse, and when Collins was diagnosed with a coronavirus in late April, the family said it was horrifying.

“When she was admitted to the hospital, we were told to expect the worst because of her age and frailty,” said her niece. “She was hospitalized in an extremely lethargic state and 24 hours later confirmed to be a coronavirus. She received excellent care and became stronger and stronger every day.

“I was worried because I was wondering if a 104-year-old woman would be enough to survive, but she survived completely,” Balmforth continued. “She had an iron constitution and a strong will. She loved red wine and glass of champagne. That’s her secret.”

Collins has been working in the medical industry for many years and, with a twist of fate, was once employed at Royal Derby Hospital where he once fought COVID-19, SWNS reports.

A woman who was “hardly independent” was a widow for about 50 years and continued to drive until she was 101 years old. Before moving to Gables, Collins lived alone until he was 102 years old.
