Sonoma County will test specific individuals for antibody against the new coronavirus (COVID-19) starting Saturday, June 6, 2020. The tests are conducted daily at the Public Health Laboratory in Santa Rosa, with plans to strategically expand this service at some hospitals and health centers in the county.
New antibody tests are part of a larger surveillance effort to better understand the spread of the virus. Once all test sites are up and running, we plan to test approximately 110 antibodies per day with the goal of testing 3,500 people within the first four weeks.
Data from antibody tests will be used to assess the county’s efforts to help delay the spread of the coronavirus and inform decisions about resumption. This test is not intended for general use, but for surveillance purposes.
The first phase of this test involves first responders such as Paramix, EMT, firefighters, police, and individuals who have previously tested positive for COVID-19 and then recovered.
People in the first responder profession are considered to be at increased risk of exposure to the novel coronavirus and are therefore more likely than the general population of being infected with COVID-19 and subsequently developing antibodies. There is.
This high-priority test is also reserved for high-risk groups, including close contacts with family and household members, and those who have previously tested for virus positivity.
This test is free and you are expected to receive the test results within 2 weeks.
Unlike the virus tests used to diagnose current infections, antibody tests detect antibodies that indicate a previous virus infection. Antibody tests do not check for the presence of the virus itself. Rather, it reveals whether the immune system has responded to the infection. Depending on the time of infection and the timing of the test, it may take 1 to 3 weeks after the infection to be detected, so antibodies may not be detected in people with current COVID-19 infection.
Antibody tests processed at Sonoma County Public Health Laboratory require intravenous blood collection. Due to the high accuracy of the test, almost 90% of those who were positive for the antibody had COVID-19 and almost 100% of those who were negative were free of the virus.
Antibodies are usually made up of proteins that help eradicate infections, but having antibodies to coronavirus can prevent someone from getting the virus again, or if its protection period lasts. I don’t know yet.
