UK Expands Access to Pfizer’s COVID Antivirals Through Trials | Mighty 790KFGO

London (Reuters) – The UK adds thousands more by adding access to Pfizer’s oral antiviral COVID-19 treatment to trials evaluating the best use of the drug in highly vaccinated populations. Expanding to people, the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.
Paxrovid, a combination of Pfizer’s new pills and the old antiviral ritonavir, became available in the UK in February to thousands of people with weakened immunity.
Paxlovid is currently being added to the UK Panorama National Survey. The study collects data on the optimal use of the drug in the vaccinated adult population while making the antiviral drug available to a large number of patients.
Paxlovid has been shown to reduce the relative risk of death or hospitalization by almost 90% in clinical trials of high-risk individuals treated for 5 days. It is currently recommended to be taken in the early stages of COVID, but was added to another inpatient trial last month.
The UK has reported 170,000 deaths from COVID-19, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson has listed antivirals as part of a plan to learn to coexist with the virus, immunosuppressing.
“As we learn to live with COVID, the UK continues to lead the use of state-of-the-art treatments that have already saved the lives of many of the country’s most vulnerable patients,” said the Minister of Health. Sajid Javid said in a statement.
The panoramic study enrolls adults aged 50 years and older, or adults aged 18-49 years with basic health conditions who may be at increased risk of severe COVID.
Paxlovid is the second antiviral drug added to the study, following Molnupiravir, a pill manufactured by Merck & Co and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.
The Ministry of Health said 20,000 people will participate in panoramic studies to generate data on molnupiravir, and an additional 17,500 will be enrolled to access Paxrovid.
