Unexplained hepatitis cases being investigated among Irish children
In the last 6 weeks, a small number of cases of unexplained hepatitis have been identified among Irish children.
Health Service Executive confirmed that the number of cases was “less than 5”, which was higher than normally expected in 6 weeks.
The case was not related, it said.
“Investigations are currently underway to identify the causes of these diseases,” he added.
In the UK, health officials have also reported an increase in unexplained hepatitis in children. Investigations are underway in the United Kingdom to determine the cause of the disease. In Scotland, the 10 cases requiring hospitalization were children aged 1 to 5 years. Most of the cases in Scotland were published after March 2022.
In Wales, there are no known cases currently under investigation, but similar clinical symptoms have been seen in a very small number of cases since early 2022.
According to the ECDC, no confirmed cases have been reported in Northern Ireland at this time.
Some of the children admitted to the UK tested positive for Covid-19, while others had adenovirus.
The ECDC states that if a child has serum transaminase> 500 IU / L and hepatitis E is excluded from hepatitis A, medical staff should report a similar case to the National Institute of Public Health. Said.
