Raptor Center: Bird feeders, baths may help spread HPAI
Animal health officials are calling on Minnesota to consider removing bird feeders and bird baths as bird flu continues to spread.
Dr. Victoria Hall, a veterinary epidemiologist and managing director of the Raptor Center, said outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continued to be a concern in the state.
Not all birds show signs of illness, but all birds are susceptible to illness and can spread the virus to others.
That’s why the Hall and Raptor Center are urging Minnesota to increase wild bird populations by removing gathering areas, such as feeding boxes and baths, for months before the virus’s transmission rate declines.
Hall said authorities didn’t know everything about the H5N1 and that there was minimal surveillance using songbirds. However, some birds, such as birds of prey, often become seriously ill and die of illness.
“At the Raptor Center, we see the effects of HPAI every day. We triage and test birds suffering from HPAI’s deadly neurological disease, such as bald eagles and great horned owls. Humane euthanasia is the only tool we have left to help them, “Hall wrote in a social media post. “We also know that this strain and outbreak cause serious illness in other species such as geese, ducks, bluejays, and crows.”
According to Hall, the H5N1 is durable and can survive for several weeks in a cool, moist environment.
The virus was first identified in a commercial turkey activity in Minnesota on March 25, but has since spread to at least 38 sites in 17 counties across the state, 1.8 million as of Thursday. Affects birds with more than wings.
It does not cause disease in humans, but poses a great risk to birds, including the production of Minnesota turkeys.
“We can take action in a short period of time, so we don’t accidentally help spread the virus,” Hall said. “This outbreak will not last forever. I am very much looking forward to being able to safely replace the bird feeder.”
