Scientists try to unravel the relationship between coffee and cholesterol
New studies suggest that men who drink espresso may have higher cholesterol levels than women.
Past studies have associated high levels of cholesterol in the blood with naturally occurring chemicals in coffee. This is a problem related to heart problems such as stroke.
To find out the relationship between brewing methods and cholesterol, a team of Norwegian scholars set out to find out how people drink coffee and assess their blood cholesterol levels.
Their study, published in the journal OpenHeart, looked at information from more than 21,000 people over the age of 40 living in Tromso, Norway.
Analysis of the data showed that the association between coffee and cholesterol depends on the brewing method and that there is a significant difference by gender.
People who drink coffee with 3-5 cups of espresso a day are more likely to have significantly higher blood cholesterol levels than those who do not.

Men who drank so much espresso seemed to have higher levels than women.
People who drank more than 6 cups of Cafetiere coffee (also known as boiled / plunger coffee) also had higher levels than those who did not.
Drinking more than 6 cups of filtered coffee will increase blood cholesterol levels in women, not men.
Researchers have not found a significant association between instant coffee and cholesterol levels.
“The most important finding was that consumption of espresso coffee was significantly associated with an increase in S-TC (total serum cholesterol),” the author writes.
They added: “Espresso coffee consumption was associated with an increase in S-TC, with a significantly stronger association for men compared to women.
“Boiled / plunger coffee was associated with an increase in S-TC for both men and women.
“Filtered coffee was associated with a slight increase in female S-TC.”
They added: “Coffee is the most frequently consumed central nervous system stimulant in the world.
“Because of the high consumption of coffee, even a small health impact can have a significant health impact.
“The more knowledge we have about the link between espresso coffee and serum cholesterol, the better our coffee consumption recommendations.”
Dr. Dipender Gill of the University of London, St. George, commented on the study and cautioned when interpreting the conclusions from the data, adding:
“Specifically, men and individuals who prefer a particular type of coffee may also have other lifestyle factors that affect cholesterol levels.”
