Booster shots, indoor masking encouraged in rising COVID risk levels, health officials say – NBC Chicago
Health officials in Illinois are encouraging COVID-19 vaccination, booster shots, and indoor masking as cases continue to grow and more counties increase their risk levels for coronavirus.
As of Friday, 23 counties in Illinois All, including Cook, Kane, McHenry, Lake, DuPage, DeKalb, Kendall, and Will counties, were listed at the “Medium” community alert level for COVID infections by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The city of Evanston said Thursday that the increased number of cases of coronavirus has increased the COVID risk level of the community from “medium” to “high.”
“While the number of cases is increasing, we are strongly encouraged to take action by recognizing this trend and making sure it is up to date with vaccinations and booster shots, rather than being alert to the public. - If your test is positive, talk to your provider immediately so that you can receive COVID-19 treatment within 5 days of starting to feel sick. Also, tell people who are in close contact within two days of getting sick or having a positive test about the positive results.
- Wash your hands frequently to cover coughing and sneezing.
If a person tests positive for COVID, Tokars also encouraged consulting a healthcare provider to receive various treatments to avoid hospitalization or death.

Over the past week, Illinois has reported 40,026 new COVID-19 cases and 45 additional deaths. The number of cases has increased, but the number of deaths has decreased by one in the last seven days.
Last week, the state reported 30,633 new deaths and 46 deaths. A week earlier, the state reported 24,646 new cases and 46 deaths.
A total of 3,209,341 coronaviruses have been reported in the state since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to the latest data from the Illinois Public Health Service. Due to the additional deaths, the state has resulted in 33,705 confirmed COVID deaths.
Over the past seven days, the state’s average weekly vaccination has dropped to 11,586, according to IDPH data. Since last Friday, 81,101 doses have been administered throughout the state.
Since vaccination began in December 2020, Illinois has been vaccinated more than 22 million times. Over 69% of Illinois residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and over 76% are vaccinated at least once. It will be boosted by about 51%.
As of midnight Thursday, 909 patients were hospitalized for state COVID. Of those patients, 87 are in the ICU bed and 25 are on the ventilator.
