Cancer Research UK Race for Life returns to pool
Women, men and children gathered at the pool’s Baiter Park today to support Cancer Research UK and participate in 3k, 5k, 10k, or fairly muddy events.
Prior to the event, an impressive £ 68,172 was collected from participants.
Event manager Joe Hutchinson said:
For many runners, Race for Life is an opportunity to remember loved ones, celebrate survivors, raise money for Cancer Research UK, and bring hope for the future.
Joe added: “Participants can make us smile by dressing up and really accepting the day, and those who we may have lost along the way, remembering the importance of Race for Life. Think about it. ”
54-year-old Gale Turner attended a 10k event with his daughter Savannah. Gail lost his father, mother and sister to cancer.
Gail said: “I have had cancer in my family for generations.”
Today’s event marks the 17th year of Gale’s participation in Race for Life and the 18th year of Savannah.

She states: “When my dad got a second cancer and got a terminal illness, we started running. He was alive for our first race, and then we remember his memory. After that, my sister died of cancer and my mother recently died of cancer.
“It is really important for us that people understand the impact and what we can do to help.
“That’s a very good reason.”
Another pair in the race was Nicole Hezlet and Summer Green. The women met during a clinical trial after both were diagnosed with cancer in 2019.
Summer states:
“It’s about supporting people who are experiencing it.”
The Dorset-based running group runFAR also participated in the Baiter Park event, with its members participating in both 5k and 10k runs.
