Medical device company Trivitron Healthcare announces RTPCR test kit for monkeypox
Medical device company Trivitron Healthcare announced on Friday that it has developed a real-time PCR-based kit for detecting monkeypox (or orthopoxvirus) virus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Office of India recently requested the assistance of the ICMR of the National Institute of Virology in Pune to test suspected cases of monkeypox in Southeast Asian region (SEAR) member countries. Monkeypox not only affects countries in West Africa and Central Africa, but is also a global public health illness due to its rapid spread worldwide.
In response measures such as follow-up efforts and treatment strategies, diagnostic tools are essential to respond to manage new public health challenges. The Trivitron Healthcare R & D team has developed an RT-PCR-based kit for detecting monkeypox virus.
Trivitron’s Monkeypox Real-Time PCR Kit is a four-color fluorescence-based kit that distinguishes smallpox and monkeypox in a single reaction format in one tube, with a total travel time of one hour. In this 4-gene RT-PCR kit, the first target detects and distinguishes the broader orthopox group of viruses, the second and third targets detect and distinguish between monkeypox and smallpox viruses, respectively, and the fourth target. Detects internal controls that correspond to human cells to cope with the assay and helps track performance and its epidemic. This kit is available as Research-Use only (RUO) and is based on literature search and in silico design.
According to WHO, the “nucleic acid amplification test” is the preferred laboratory method for detection based on its sensitivity and specificity. Orthopoxvirus is “serologically cross-reactive” and the antigen (Ag) and antibody (Ab) detection approaches do not provide monkeypox-specific detection. Therefore, serology and antigen detection methods have not been approved for resource-limited detection or case studies.
WHO’s recommended specimen types for laboratory confirmation of monkeypox are skin lesion materials, including lesion surfaces and / or exudate swabs, roofs from multiple lesions, or lesion crusts. Therefore, both dry swabs and swabs placed on virus transport medium (VTM) can be used.
