Monkeypox: Nigeria confirms 21 cases of monkeypox since January
The Nigeria Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ((((NCDCLate Sunday, he said 66 suspicious cases were reported in 9 of the country’s 36 states and in the administrative capital Abuja.

Six cases were detected in May.
The NCDC stated that the risk of exposure to monkeypox virus was relatively high, based on a recent assessment conducted by Nigeria, but had a relatively low health impact.
“The current situation at home and around the world does not represent a significant threat to life or community that could lead to serious illness or high case fatality,” he said.
Authorities urged the general public to be aware of the risks and notify their doctors of any symptoms of the disease.
Monkeypox is associated with smallpox, but it is less serious.
Early symptoms include high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a chickenpox-like rash. Most people recover within a few weeks.
The virus can infect humans by infected animals. Human-to-human transmission is much rarer, and experts say it appears to be transmitted by close contact with an infected person who has blisters on the skin.
There is no specific cure, but vaccination against smallpox has been found to be about 85 percent effective.

These cases reported so far have been mostly mild, but their appearance in non-epidemic countries has worried experts.
