When, how much, and how often?
It is important to use enough sunscreen to cover the exposed skin.
“One ounce or shot glass size is enough for each application,” says Olszewski.
For complete protection, apply sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure to allow your skin to absorb the sunscreen.
Sunscreen protection, regardless of rating, declines over time. Therefore, remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours when exposed to sunlight.
The intensity of the sun’s rays is highest between 10 am and 2 pm. Therefore, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends avoiding the sun when the rays are strongest.
Will my sunscreen expire?
The US Food and Drug Administration requires that sunscreens maintain their original strength for at least three years unless exposed to excessive heat or direct sunlight.
When it gets warm, store the sunscreen in the shade or wrap it in a towel. If you notice any changes in product color or consistency, discard them.
Some sunscreens have a best-by date, so you can rest assured when using them from one year to the next.
“If you use sunscreen correctly (as if you apply it frequently and globally), your product should not exceed its expiration date,” Olszewski said.
When buying sunscreen, look for an expiration date. If missing, date the bottle and check before using.

Sunscreen isn’t just for summer.
“This is one of the most important skin care products that can be used to combat the appearance of wrinkles, age spots and aged skin,” says Olszewski.
Makeup of SPF over 15 is a good backup. However, it does not replace a high quality sunscreen that you can also use on your face, neck, ears, chest and hands.
