UCL-led research shows that staring at red light can improve eyesight
I’m the fourth one, so I welcome any suggestions that can help improve eyesight without resorting to expensive and horrifying Lasik surgery. New University College London (UCL) Research, Staring at the crimson light for 3 minutes a day can significantly improve the loss of vision.
With this discovery, scientists believe that affordable home eye care can help millions of people worldwide who are naturally blind and have poor vision. It gives people (like me) a new layer of protection against the natural aging process that steals our eyes’ sensitivity to light and their ability to distinguish colors.
“Especially above the age of 40, the visual system is severely compromised. Sensitivity and color vision of the retina are gradually diminishing, and this is an increasingly important issue as the population ages. To reverse, we tried to restart senescent cells in the retina with a short burst of longwave light,” said Professor Glen Jeffery, the lead author of the UCL Eye Institute’s research.
How was the study tested?
A small pilot study was conducted to test the concept. The researchers recruited 12 men and 12 women aged 28 to 72 years (no eye disease). Each participant was given a small handheld flashlight that emitted red light at a wavelength of 670 nanometers.
Then I examined the light for 3 minutes every day for 2 weeks. The study found that 670 nanometer light did not affect young people, but people around the age of 40 found significant improvements.
Cone color contrast sensitivity (the ability to detect color) has improved by up to 20% in some people over the age of 40. Regarding the sensitivity of the rod (ability to see in dark places), people of the same age also showed improvement, although they were inferior to the color contrast. Study participants under 40 also experienced some improvement, but did not see the same jumps as older subjects. This is because the younger eyes were not as bad as the older ones.
Glen Jeffrey also said that the red light they used was safe and had no adverse effects. However, Dr. Raj Maturi, an associate professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, was not ready to accept the idea.
“The dataset can be destroyed by three or four subjects,” he said.
The pilot study was small, with only 24 participants. To actually test these insights, we will conduct a double-blind, controlled trial of a larger group of subjects and perform long-term monitoring.
