California broke daily coronavirus record and confirmed more than 8,000 cases
In just over a week Monday, the state of California recorded the highest daily coronavirus count for the third time, with 8,000 infections and more than 6,000 deaths at the same time, officials said.
The rise will come as the virus continues to revive after an unprecedented few months of order in which the virus fights its spread. Governor Gavin Newtham said Monday that hospitalization increased by 43% over the two weeks and 37% of patients admitted to the intensive care unit during the same period.
The positive rate for COVID-19 has increased to nearly 6%, he said.
Other states and communities are working to increase the number of infections, and some are urging them to reaffirm their safety protocols.
Los Angeles County-the epicenter of the state’s virus-has ordered the closure of all beaches on the weekend of July 4, following an “alarm” spike in the new COVID-19 case. Texas officials have ordered a second bar closure and Arizona has temporarily closed bars, gyms, water parks, cinemas, nightclubs and more.
California monitors 19 counties with a surge in cases and hospitalizations at these locations. Newsom said Wednesday could include four more. Across the state, almost 223,000 people test positive for COVID-19.
Health officials in Los Angeles County reported in a disastrous warning Monday that 1 in 140 people were infected. Previous data suggests 1 in 400.
“We’re seeing an increase in transmission.” Dr. Christina Gurley, County Health Director, said: “This is a huge shift in the epidemic’s trajectory over the past few days. It’s a bad change and a cause for concern.”
Newsom announced on Tuesday that new restrictions are being considered as the number of cases grows ahead of holiday weekends. He didn’t go into the details.
He also expressed concern about large gatherings, especially family gatherings.
“Tomorrow, we will make an additional announcement about our efforts to use that dimmer switch that I mentioned, switch to home orders and start tightening things up,” he said. “Our framework is: If you’re not going to stay home and don’t want to wear a mask in a public place, we need to enforce it. We’ll announce enforcement tomorrow.”
