Cases of monkeypox associated with SF pride events – NBC Bay Area
The second case of monkeypox is associated with a recent celebration of pride in San Francisco.
It’s rarely deadly and highly curable, but for some members of the gay community, it brings back memories of the HIV and AIDS epidemics.
“This community is very familiar with sexually transmitted diseases. When a new sexually transmitted disease occurs, we take it very seriously and call for action immediately,” said Josh Zelenka of San Francisco. “It’s what we walk as we move forward, and I think people seem to be aware of it.”
Two new cases are from people who attended the party on the weekend of pride. Burning Man’s Afterglow Party and Electrolux.
Attendees are on alert and are advised to be tested for monkeypox and vaccinated if appointments are made.
Monkeypox is transmitted primarily through skin-to-skin transmission and sexual contact. It may sound scary to hear, but it is rarely fatal.
“Monkeypox is not a killing disease. Rare deaths have been reported. However, it resembles a painful rash disease, basically isolated for days or weeks until the lesion becomes a scab. “It will be done,” said Dr. George Rutherford of the University of California, San Francisco.
There are hundreds of cases in the European gay community, but so far there have been less than 20 cases of monkeypox in San Francisco. And community leaders are confident that the LGBTQ community has learned from its history.

Dr. Rutherford said a vaccine is available through San Francisco public health for people exposed to monkeypox and it is a good vaccine.
It is available within 4 days of exposure and can completely prevent infection.
Taken within 14 days can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms.
