A new case of putative monkeypox identified in Virginia
Richmond, Virginia (WRIC) —The Virginia Department of Health released an estimated case of monkeypox in Virginia on Monday.
According to VDH, the new case is an adult male living in northwestern Virginia. The patient is currently in quarantine and the health department is identifying and monitoring close contact with the patient.
This case brings the total number of federal cases up to 27.
Currently, monkeypox outbreaks occur in multiple countries, including the United States. As of July 8, the CDC reported 8,238 monkeypox cases in 57 countries. Of these cases, 790 were reported in the United States. Three monkeypox deaths have been reported worldwide.
Monkeypox is a viral disease characterized by a specific type of rash. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, malaise, and swollen lymph nodes. Diffusion is usually caused by close contact between people, or by contact with contaminated clothing or linen. Symptoms usually appear 6 to 14 days after exposure and often resolve within 2 to 4 weeks.
There is no approved treatment for monkeypox in the United States, but treatments to relieve symptoms are available through the federal government with the coordination of VDH.
Two vaccines are also available through the federal government for those at high risk. The federal government is currently expanding vaccines and testing for monkeypox, and VDH is working with federal partners on these expansions.
High-risk groups include men who have sex with men (MSMs), those who have been in close contact with people who have symptoms or rashes of monkeypox, and those who have traveled to places where monkeypox cases have been identified.
