Shows that tilting alcoholic beverages on your own during adolescence and young adulthood increases the risk of later alcohol use disorders. And the risk is especially high for women.
Dr. Casey Creswell, lead author and associate professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, said, “Most of the young people who drink are drinking with others in social situations, but quite a few. Young people are drinking alone. Lonely drinking is a unique and powerful risk factor for future alcohol use disorders. ”
Health care providers often screen for dangerous alcohol use. But their question is often about quantification and frequency. Creswell says the situation in which people drink is also important.
Researchers examined a study of patterns of alcohol use from about 4,500 adolescents. Then they chased them for 17 years. About 25% of adolescents and 40% of young adults reported drinking alone.
Researchers say their findings suggest that targeted interventions may help inform young people about the risk of lonely drinking.
This study is published in the journal “Drug and Alcohol Dependence”.
